Sigil #1 Comic Review and the Return of CrossGen Comics

Sigil is the first of Marvel’s new CrossGen line of comics, soon to be followed by The Ruse. Sigil is a miniseries written by writer Mike Carey who is best known for his work on Marvel’s X-Men Legacy and Vertigo’s the Unwritten.

The story follows 16 year old girl Samantha as she struggles with average high school troubles such as bullies and class. But she is unlike other girls her age, she recently developed an interesting birthmark on her chest that has also began to cause out of this world dreams unlike anything anyone could imagine.

Sigil’s story is fantasy driven with a touch of reality, which reminds me of Carey’s The Unwritten. The book makes the characters easy to relate to, while enticing the reader with the fantasy driven alternate reality. The story is reminiscent of Joe Quesada’s miniseries NYX, which makes me believe that is one of the reasons he wanted to bring this series to Marvel comics.

The art in the book is average, having a normal feel to it really providing nothing special, but not really having anything special about it. Leonard Kirk who is best known for his work on DC’s Supergirl does the art. The best aspect of the art is when Samantha is found in the alternate reality, it is as if Kirk focused more on this part of the story in order to emphasize the importance of that part of the story.

It will be interesting to see how this story pans out, and how Marvel will integrate the old Sigil series into this new rendition; especially since the original story was about all out intergalactic war. This is a book definitely worth picking up if you’re looking for something fun.
