The Grim Ghost #1 Comic Review and the return of Atlas Comics

The Grim Ghost is one of three series that have debuted from the recently resurrected Atlas Comics, along with Wulf and Phoenix. For those who do not know, Atlas comics was a company in the 1970’s that went out of business leaving its characters and their stories ending with it.

The first thing a reader will notice about this book is its size, and with a low price of 2.99 that is a positive in any comic reader’s book. The book is written by Tony Isabella, best know for creating DC’s Black Lightening and Stephen Susco, most well known for writing the horror movie “The Grudge”. While the Kelley Jones, whom is best known for his work on the Sandman.

I was not a fan of the writing in this book. By the third page I felt as though it was too wordy and did not rely on the art as much as it probably should. I understand that the book is trying to convey a history of the characters and their purpose, but from experience, I know that it can be done in a way that it can be picked up by a happy equilibrium between writing and art.

The art of Kelley Jones is great as it was in the Sandman, but the art is hindered greatly by colorist Kieran Oats. The story has a very dark feel to it, and since the issue takes place at night it would make sense to have colors the reflected the mood of the comic, and even if brighter colors were chosen to be used, they should reflect the dingy reflection of moonlight that would inevitably be present. Oats uses colors that are bright and opulent. In addition, the color used really takes away from the beauty of Jones’ art.

Overall the book was mediocre. The writing was sub par, and I feel as though the background story of the character has been done before and is not very original. The art was the only savior of the book, and it’s quality was lessened by colorist of the book.
