Daredevil Reborn

This is the first issue of a 4 part mini series that chronicles what is happening with Daredevil in the aftermath of Shadowland; and also while Black Panther takes over the ongoing Daredevil series.

The issue begins with Matt Murdock having an internal conflict about finding himself, and touches upon on how he can hopefully redeem himself after everything that happened. The story takes place in New Mexico, for now at least, and Murdock find himself, but inevitably Murdock gets himself into some trouble with the locals, and on top of it, the local authority.

The writing on the issue is great. I have been a long time fan of Andy Diggle, and sometimes I believe that he was destined to write Daredevil/Matt Murdock, his stories are so fluid with the character and the reader feels as though he/she isn’t just reading one character. Diggle makes it feel as if Daredevil and Matt Murdock are two different characters and really develops a separate yet connected character for both.

One thing I was worried about going into this series was the art. When I think of Daredevil I think of Roberto De La Torre, especially since his has a sullen dark feeling to his art which really fits the fractured personality of Matt Murdock. In this series Marvel elected to use the art of Davide Gianfelice, which at first I didn’t like, but after reading the issue it started to grow on me. I began to realize the the lighter, real life feel of his pencils, coupled with Hollingworth’s inks really gave a redeeming feeling to Murdock, which is really what this series is all about.

The issue ends with the reader wanting more, Andy Diggle as a way of building up a huge amount of anticipation and then leaving the reader eagerly awaiting the next issue, and there is no shortage of this in Daredevil Reborn. The story leaves off with Matt having tap into the inner Daredevil and bring the two halves of his personalities back together, but if you want to know why, you’re just going to have to pick up the issue.

9 out of 10
