DC Universe Online; Legends

One of the things that I was worried about when reading this comic was that it was going to be so heavily intertwined into the storyline of the game that I would not be able to understand the storyline and feel alienated while reading the book. Luckily when I finished the book, the story was well rounded and gave ample information for a new reader and didn’t ostracize anyone not playing the game.

The story revolves around the fall out of the alliance between Brainiac and Lex Luthor. Luthor has destroyed and overpowered all of the world’s super heroes in a future storyline, where Luthor has been helping Brainac lead an invasion of the planet.

Both Tony Bedard and Marv Wolfman write DC Universe Online: Legends. There two writers do a good job at preparing the reader to have a loose understanding of exactly what is going on in this story line and how everything became as bad as it is. The two do a great job at creating conversation, and conveying the thoughts of the many characters in the book. The one downside to the story I thought was that is really mirrored Final Crisis and seemed less than original. But aside from that, the story was well written and enjoyable.

The art is also undertaken by two artists; Howard Porter and Livesay. I usually enjoy when there are two artists on a book, because it is always nice to compare the two art styles, but one this book it seemed as though the two different artists really blended into each other and it was seamless. The only difference you could tell between the two artists were the faces and facial structures of the many characters featured in the book, but aside from there was hardly a difference.

Overall the book was decent. The storyline is definitely interesting, but highly unoriginal. The art was good, and it’s always nice to see the work of multiple artists, and in this case multiple writers as well. The real downside of the comic was the description of what happened prior to the story featured. It gave a small amount of background story, loosely giving the details of exactly what happened, but not enough to completely satisfy the reader. I can definitely say that the comic is better than the game, so do yourself a favor, if you were interested in the game save the 60 bucks, plus monthly fees, and go with the comic instead.
