Super quick Video Game Review: Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is a not quite balance 2d fighter. Every characters feel and play different. Although lack many of the features that it predecessor, Super Street Fighter IV, has it is still an unique and fun game. Online can really be hampered by lag. Overall if you liked Marvel Comics or Capcom characters, MVC3 is definitely worth a shot.

Uncanny X-Force #1

I was quite sad when Kyle and Yost’s X-Force came to an end, but when I heard Rick Remender and Jerome Opena were taking over the book and starting with a new team I became a little more okay with it ending. I really love these two as a team, and when Punisher went sour with the introduction of Frankencastle and I left the book, I really missed these two and the work they did. So to finally get a chance to experience them in action again was exciting.

Deadpool Max #1

Yet again I find myself reading a new Deadpool series, another ongoing one nonetheless. I feel as though Deadpool is spread to thin, and Marvel just isn’t letting up. But since I am a fan of the character, I thought I would check out the book and give it a chance.

The thing I was most hesitant about when it came to this book was that the art was being done by Kyle Baker, an artist that has a really unique style that I usually do not like at all. And in this case, I thought the art was okay, nothing special, but very unique, not in a bad way though. One thing that I was happy with was the writing since it was done by Eisner award winning artist, David Lapham, it was interesting, it had good momentum, and it all wrapped up in one issue which I always like about a comic because it allows for new readers to join the comic at anytime.

Deadpool #1000

Sadly, it is true. It probably has been roughly 100 issues since Deadpool 900 came out, so of course Marvel thought that it would be awesome to put out a Deadpool 1000. I am not trying to complain, I myself am a Deadpool fan, but I do think that his popularity and Marvel’s obsession with the Merc with a Mouth is getting a little out of hand. Regardless, Marvel put out a great issue with Deadpool 1000, way better than my expectations were set at.

Just looking at this issue caused me to think two positive thoughts. Number one, look at the size of this issue! It’s a HUGE book! And for the cover price of $5, it is definitely worth it. The second thing I noticed was the great wrap around cover by Dave Johnson. I always love seeing his covers, and he never lets me down when it comes to Deadpool (if you haven’t already, check out his connecting covers from Prelude to Deadpool Corps). Then when I opened the issue, I was even more impressed.

Victor Gischler's X-Men #1 Comic Review

On X-Men day 2010, Marvel Comics released the much-anticipated X-Men series, the first X-men #1 in 20 years! The creative team behind the book is Victor Gischler (Deadpool Corps) and Paco Medina (Deadpool), using the storyline “Curse of the Mutants” as their first story arc. I have been excited for this issue to come out for quite some time now because I am a huge Victor Gischler fan.

One of the main concerns I had about this issue was the fact that it was coming out prior to the conclusion of X-Men Second Coming, fearing that the issue would release spoilers for the cross-over X-fans have been enjoying for the last few months. And to my surprise, there were no spoilers, no mention to Second Coming at all, and did well standing alone as a new X-book without any support of the many other X-titles.

The arc starts off focusing around a character that has been absent from the X-Men universe for some time, Jubilee; which is an exciting surprise to many X-Fans. After an incident involving a frightening character in a San Francisco park, the X-Men find themselves facing a new terrorist threat and what follows after said incident lays out an interesting premise for the next several issues of this series.

Without spoiling any more of the story, the main idea of this first arc stems out of Victor

Gischler’s one-shot “The Death of Dracula” and the X-Men discover that they have a Vampire problem on their hands. The one problem that I have is that I feel that Marvel released a little too much information about this new series, which kind of dulled down the surprises that occurred in this first issue. Also, I think that being able to read ‘The Death of Dracula” prior to this issue also spoiled a number of surprises and allowed me to kinda figure out all the secrets and twists that the book insinuates.

Overall, this was a great starting issue. It kept my interest the entire duration of the story, had great writing and great art, and met all the expectations I had, except for one. The one thing that I was very disappointed about was that, there were a ton of promo pin-ups that were released in many of Marvel’s issues the past few months that were awesome. I was hoping that they would be the variant covers for this first issue, but they were not. But aside from that, everything was great and I am eagerly awaiting the next issue. Welcome to the X-Universe X-Men.

Captain America: Who Won't Wield the Shield Review

Marketed to readers as yet another Deadpool book, Captain America: Who Won't Wield the Shield was anything but that. Sure it has Deadpool on the cover, and has a short Deadpool story on the inside, but it is by no mean the main focus of the book.

The main story is actually pretty funny, featuring a number of Marvels most popular writers; Jason Aaron, Matt Fraction, Ed Brubaker, and Brian Bendis.

The book tells a few different stories aside from the main story, such as a psychedelic Captain America story that makes you feel like you just took a hit of acid.

This is definitely worth checking out, it had some good laughs, good writing, and was a fun read in general.



And Since it was almost Deadpool free it may even be Kevin Falkenberg approved!

Favorite Comic: Aladdin Legacy of the Lost #2
*Warning Spoiler Alert*

First off, for the price this book is great. 4.99 for 64 pages with no ads? You cant beat that. Now onto the review, When I first started doing these comic reviews every week Aladdin LotL #1 was rated my least favorite comic of the week. But if you look back and/or remember what I said at the end of the review is that the second book was bound to be better, and it was. This issue really develops the story that I was dying for in the last issue, as well as introduces a couple of really cool characters. The art of Sejic is awesome and really brings the book alive, although sometimes it is a little hard to follow because of the way some of the pages are set up.

The story picks up by introducing the King and his daughter the Princess. Aladdin has become a prince because of his discovery of the magic lamp, and is giving money to the poor. The King double crosses him and turns him over to his nemesis Quassi and there is a fight between the two of them. Aladdin ends up cutting off his hand and acquiring a magic ring that he has, unbeknown to what it can do. Aladdin seeks aid from Captain Sinbad and he brings Aladdin to the Mantis queen for help. By the end of the book Aladdin is able to access the power of the ring he found and the story ends with a great set up for the last installment of this mini series.

Many other events take place during this comic, but I dont want to ruin them for anyone who wishes to read it. But regardless, if you are not reading this check it out. It is a great value for the price and since you would be able to read both issues one and two at the same time it would make issue one better because the reader will get the instant gratification of issue two. Regardless, this is a great read and I cant wait for the last issue.

Cornbread's Favorite and Least Favorite Comics of the Week - 3/24

Favorite Comic: Nemesis #1

This should not be a surprising pick. Nemesis has been on my mind since Jared first started ranting and raving about it months ago. Also, what can beat a team made of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven? Anyways, lets get to the review.

The book reads fast, and many people may see this as a negative aspect, but with Nemesis it did not seem that way. I felt that when the book ended that I had learned a good amount of information about the story line and was content with how it ended, even though I wanted more.

Nemesis starts out by introducing Nemesis by exhibiting just how ruthless of a super villain he is. Regardless about what people are saying, I think the art is great. McNiven's pure pencil work on the book truely exhibits how great of an artist he really is. Also, with the dulled down colors give a certain feel to the story that enhances the dark violence that characterizes Nemesis.

The story is fulled with action, swears and gore which perfectly fits the dark theme I think Millar and McNiven are going for. The mysteriousness of the characters is also what makes the book so interesting. Millar revealed virtually nothing about Nemesis or the secondary main character Morrow which I think enhances the story and will make for a more interesting part of the remainder of the series.

Overall, this was a great story and it seems like it will be an awesome series. I would also like to add even though non-stop action, swearing and killing is awesome it will eventually get old, so by making this a 4 part mini the creators will be able to capitalize and keep this book popular till its end.

Favorite Comic: Prelude to Deadpool Corps #2

This was the funniest comic I have read in a long time. I was kind of skeptical of how Deadpool Corps was going to be (being the 4th Deadpool monthly and all) since the first issue was just okay, but the second issue just blew me out of the water. First and foremost, Johnson's covers are fantastic, and I love how he is doing a 5 part connecting cover for this mini. What made this book so great was how hilarious the alternate universe in the story was prefect. In this issue you are following Corps member Kidpool who is a smart ass Wade Wilson who is going to an Xavier institution and the story just has him harassing Cyclops the entire time, which I thought was great because I am not a fan of Mr. Summers. Aside from the constant harassment, there is a witty Professor X who is trying to get with Emma Frost the entire time, which proves to be hilarious.

In addition to being an all around great book, this issue has helped me in making a difficult decision I have been faced with...whether I like the way Gishler (Merc w/a Mouth) writes Deadpool or how Way (Deadpool) writes the character. If Deadpool Corps proves to be good, and if Merc keeps being a solid book I think I am going to have to pick it up.

Hey Everyone. It was a pretty small week so it was kinda hard to pick a favorite and least favorite. But here it is

Favorite Comic: New Ultimates #1
*Warning Spoiler Alert*

Its is kinda weird as to why I decided to pick up this comic, its just that I really liked the Variant cover for the issue so I thought I would give it a shot. First off, I would like to state that the art is what made this my favorite comic of the week. Frank Cho, I salute you. In addition, I surprisingly enjoyed the humor that was put into the book by Jeff Loeb (even though they were only funny because Cho's art made them that way). I dont usually like the Ultimate series because of how different the universe is, but this was pretty good and makes me want to give the Ultimate Comics line another chance (which is why I picked up Ultimate X to read later this week). The best part is probably Thor's face half way through the book which if you read this you will know exactly what I am talking about. The cover is kinda ridiculous though, it is a 6 page long pull out "poster" that is just over the top and is folded very strangely which makes it look bad. Anyways, I enjoyed the book, but I am kind of disappointed that it will come out so infrequently.
