Journey Into Mystery #622 Comic Review

Fear itself continues as we follow the story of the recently resurrected Loki and his life among the asgardians. Thor himself believes that the young Loki that has been brought back from Hel itself is a malleable mind that can be molded for the better and escape what his pervious self had done, but can Thor convince the rest of asgard of the same?

Journey into Mystery shows Loki’s path to finding himself, learning his god powers all over again and making the decision to become what Thor wants him to be, or to fall onto the path of his former self. As the series continues, readers will see if Loki will team with Thor to eliminate this fear that looms over asgard, or will he soon become part of that which haunts asgard? Only time will tell.

X-Men writer Kieron Gillen writes journey into Mystery, and he does a great job transitioning into a completely different frame of mind of writing when it comes to the asgardians. He use a narrator to tell Loki’s journey into mystery, showing how as the days go on he is evolving, learning more and more every second. His character development for Loki is unique and fits in well with the lore of Marvel’s asgardian line. His writing for this books seems more natural than his writing for X-Men and it will be interesting to see if he stays on one of the Thor related titles.

Doug Braithwaite does the art, and it is simply beautiful. Although it is drawn, it has a painted feel to it, and really brings to life asgard in a way that has not been done in ages. The key to his art is the facial expressions he creates, they almost tell the story for Gillen, and if an issue was done of just Braithwaite’s art without any text he would be able to get the story across without a second thought.

All in all, Journey into Mystery is a quality Marvel title, and may be even more enjoyable than the main Fear Itself title. There are going to be a lot of tie-ins for Fear Itself, and if you are trying to choose only a few I would definitely recommend Journey into Mystery, it provides a great story with even better writing and the reader will not be left disappointed.
