Fear Itself #1 Comic Review

The Marvel crossover event of 2011 begins here with Fear Itself Book One. Following the aftermath of Siege, Earth is faced with a decision to make: what to do with Asgard and the fallen Asgardians. What will happen when Odin and Thor turn against each other? What does the daughter of the Red Skull have to do with all of this? All of these answers can be found inside this astonishing issue.

Fear Itself is written by Matt Fraction and drawn by Stuart Immonen. Fraction does a great job in this issue of integrating a feeling of real life politics into the Marvel universe, building upon dark times where in the civilian world the economy is down, people are at their each others throats, and no one really knows exactly what to do. Fraction also does a great job writing the conflict between Thor and Odin, as well as the integration of Tony Stark and his plans to rebuild Asgard on earth. Marvel did a great job choosing Fraction to write this crossover since he is seasoned with many of the characters who are going to be playing major roles.

The art of Stuart Immonen is fantastic as usual. He presents his pages in an almost movie like fashion, which pays off when creating a book such as Fear Itself which is bound to have a story of movie like proportions. It will be exciting to see how he portrays a number of the imminent fight scenes that are sure to come in this crossover event. Immonen’s art coupled with Laura Martin’s colors make for a beautifully illustrated issue that will not call for disappointment.

The last few Marvel crossovers have been disappointing for sure (i.e. Secret Invasion, Siege), but it seems that Marvel will be washing away their negative reputation with Fear Itself. It is going to be a seven issue maxi series, which will give Fraction enough room to really develop the story and the characters so that he can give fans the proper crossover they have been waiting for since Civil War back in 2006. Fear itself is sure to blow up in coming issues and no reader is going to want to miss what will happen next.

  2. I did enjoy fear itself, but the biggest knock against this issue was Thors dialogue, which was awful. Fraction has not shown in his Thor run, or this issue, to have a clear grasp on the voice of the character.
