Being Human Review

“Three roommates living in Boston who appear to have normal lives despite being a ghost, a vampire and a werewolf.”

Mondays at 9:00 pm

If you haven’t been watching Being Human…I’m not completely surprised. In the current entertainment industry vampires/werewolves rein supreme and it can get a little old. However, reel in your Twilight induced knee-jerk reactions and wrap your mind around the fact that SyFy (stupid new name and all) has come out with a very solid show, but even more surprising, an entertaining show revolving around vampires and werewolves.

After 11 episodes, there is still a fresh feel, new mysteries being presented and solved and season long plot points being further delved into. I’ve come to care for many of the characters, being invested enough to feel sad with their heartbreak and invested in their survival. Initially unaware of a BBC version of the show, I think the American re-imagining has a great chance; and the change from Britain to Boston has worked very well.

With two episodes left there is still time to catch up on the ones already aired; SyFy.com has episodes 1-3 available and claims to be posting the rest some time in April. If you have access to any of the Primetime onDemand-type extras, episodes are also available there.

If you are already a fan (and the three previous paragraphs were redundant for you), or if you catch up and become instantly hooked there is an upcoming event (April, 15, 16, 17, 2011) with the opportunity for you to meet two of the characters. Pittsburgh’s Comicon (www.pittsburghcomicon.com) will be hosting Sam Witwer (character: Aidan) and Sarah Allen (character: Rebecca) for your viewing and meeting pleasure.

Aside from some slightly “TV” special effects, Being Human brings an entertaining and enjoyable show to the SyFy network. Check it out!

  1. I would agree with you being human is a pretty good show like you said with so many other vampire and werewolf tv shows and movies out there you can get pretty sick of them but these characters are deep and the story is interesting

  2. First thing I have to say is that I also agree and love the show. Second thing is the more sad and disturbing part.

See when Sci-Fi became SyFy it was because ABC Universal took over the channel. Bought them out basically. That's why Caprica disappeared, Doctor Who is only available on BBC America and Stargate Universe was cancelled. ABC took our nice little independent Sci-Fi channel and introduced it's broken rating system which has lead to the quick end of some fantastic programming. Heck, they can't even keep their own channel afloat. So, it comes as no wonder that "SyFy" is slowly dying too. Don't believe me. How many more night-vision views of dark forests or houses where someone says, "Shhh! I think I heard something." is it going to take? Just look at the awful prime-time line-up if that doesn't convince you. Aside from the few good (and actual) science-fiction/fantasy shows on during the 8-11pm time slots all you're going to find is the afore mentioned "night-vision" shows and professional wrestling. WRESTLING! I actually miss the Saturday movie marathons with the string of terrible B-rated horror flicks... That's saying something, right there.
